I think of it as what the folkies call a "zipper song", with verses that you can add or remove or swap around. I don't entirely like Cohen's cynicism about relationships, so I might focus on the more mystically-oriented verses. It's odd, though, because I've always been drawn to Cohen's mysticism in spite of the heavily Biblical imagery it's usually expressed in (e.g., "Suzanne" - the Judy Collins version was one of the greatest hits of my hippie adolescence).
