Important news: I will be moving house in August, and will almost certainly not have an August One Card Draw as a result. I will try to do one in July, but that might not be feasible, either, since I will be very busy. So make sure you get in on this one, as you might have a dry spell for a while...although you can, of course, always order a reading through my profile or website!

Comment and I will pull a card for you from my original, unique bird oracle deck. Anyone and everyone is welcome! The more detail you give in your request, the better I can interpret the card's meaning for you, which is my role as intermediary, however, even just a general request will get my best effort; it's up to you. For privacy, you may post anonymously; sponsors may choose to get their reading via private message.

If you are facing a choice, the cards may help point in the most positive direction for you. You may request an overall card to meditate upon. You might want a card to let you know what new thing may come into your life in the near future, or what is the most important thing facing you at this time. You may ask a specific question and we will see if the universal subconscious can answer it for you. However you use this opportunity, I hope it will be helpful!

Let's see if I can get a nice specific answer on your career situation this time...
Well...specific answer not so much...but, you know, that's really rare with divination.
Because you are awesome and my friend, I threw in a second card. It's definitely plenty for you to ponder!

Your first card is Bowerbird. The builder-artist (ooh, like someone else I know!), this bird builds and decorates a bower to attract his mate. Obviously, there are themes of romance and courtship, structure building and decorating, of creativity and the value of beauty for its sake. (Hrm, this seems to be supporting keeping the shop open and enjoying your art for its own sake...or does it suggest a whole NEW business you should get into. Have you considered becoming a tattoo artist?) This bird also emphasizes thoughtfulness, thinking things through, patience, and precision. (All of which you need no matter what!)

Your second card is Turkey. (Well, clearly the cards know you are a guy!) Male pride, virility/fertility and cunning, mostly cunning! Know your territory. (I think this is really important for you!) Be fearless even when you are in a position of weakness. (This, too!) These birds use short bursts of energy at just the right moment. This bird of the open forest also teaches about needing a balance of private and public. (Relevant!) Turkeys are very resilient (like you!) and bring abundance with them. (You'll work it out for the best!)

Tattooing IS actually something I'd considered being interested in, but you pretty much have to apprentice to someone in order to learn. While we DO have a guy in town now, I don't have the leisure to get off work and just hang out there until after midnight, assuming he'd even be willing to teach.

All these artistic opportunities mean more time away from the family, which I already feel like I spend too much time away from and am failing miserably at being a part of these days. But the only solution is to not go to work - which is not an option - so for now, I just roll with it and pretend that it'll magically get better someday, and that this is NOT the new 'normal' or The Way Things Are.

Maybe you could talk to him and see if there's some way to work something out? You could do an intensive thing, maybe, sacrificing a month or so but packing in a lot more learning in that time, something like that...

I understand! Thinking about some of the messages from Turkey, maybe you could do something with your hours? Maybe less days open or something? I think the key is being really smart about how you manage the business to allow you to find a way to improve the overall situation.

Okay, I'm starting my first ever grown-up job on Monday, I'm nervous nervous nervous and so worried it won't work out. I could use a message that it'll either all be okay or I should start thinking about something else (still) (again) (being unemployed straight out of college is STILL the best time ever /sarcasm). And let me remind Duck if it cares to show up again that I really am paying attention to home life and self care right now and I'm shedding a lot of other things that were important so I can have space to sit and think and take care of myself. Really. Sadly.

I feel for you! I have sent the requisite note to Duck, and I'm glad you are taking care of yourself, even if it's hard!

I drew Thrush; bringer of depth, increasing of secrets, strong blood, alchemy, the magic of music, musical notes, anvil, blacksmith, rustling of leaves. This is the bird of autumn.

So I'd say you are safe in this job till at least next fall. You may choose to leave for a better position or you may find the work environment too full of politics/back-stabbing/etc. Be careful of getting caught up in such things and you may be there longer.

Yeah, okay. That sounds pretty much exactly like what my own intuition has been telling me. Thank you for the outside confirmation! "Bringer of depth" and "increasing of secrets" sounds really interesting and goes along well with my plan to spend a LOT more time journalling and sitting and thinking, too.

Hm. For you, I drew Hen, the card of the mother, associated with instinct/intuition, enlightenment in death, protection of children and lunatics, innocence, nurturing, patience, vigilance, small reward. As a major food bird around the world, hens are deeply entwined with humanity.

I think a second card would be nice - actually, the first fits the story I'm working on. On the other hand, I think those things always show up in what I'm writing -- but it does help on this one!

For your second card, I drew Wren. Keywords include work, craft, good work, magic/wizardry, woodwork/carpentry and unexpectedness. The wren brought fire and is king of the birds, associating with all them due mostly to its small, nonthreatening appearance and lovely song. Wren is resourceful and represents the real power and intelligence behind the figurehead on the throne. This is the bird of magic.

I'd like a card, please. I feel trapped in a pattern of destruction that keeps drawing me back into its clutches no matter what I do to escape. What is suggested so I can get out to freedom?

For you, I drew Lapwing, the bird of spring. This is a powerful card representing birth/rebirth, the Queen (maiden with the full power of woman), beginnings, marvel/wonder, stumbling in awe, rushing ahead with little experience, answers and water/rain. This bird also speaks of disguise, false hope or false injury, wailing. This is also the bird of Ostara; it was a lapwing that the goddess turned into a hare that lays beautiful eggs, because she was late to start spring one year and the bird was dying in the snow.

This card certainly speaks to your situation! You need a spring, a whole new beginning, a total change in your life to escape this pattern of destruction. I wish you luck!

For you, I drew Lark. In the coldest of times, there is still freshness; beneath the snow is the soil of the earth in which good things grow. This is the bird of winter. It speaks of Earth and Sun, of spirals, of the sacred voice/sacred song, the importance of just listening, the warming of body and soul, seeking/loving the sun/light.

A good card for meditation, I think!

For contemplation, I drew Magpie. The beautiful and strikingly colored magpie is another of the very smart birds in the crow family; magpies are one of a small number of animals, and the only non-mammal, that can recognize themselves in a mirror. They are known for their chatter, their love of bright objects, their ability and willingness to eat pretty much anything and their fearlessness, which doesn’t get them in trouble nearly as often as it should. They are natural risk-takers, though not without reason, and they thrive on the constant change life provides. The chattering of a magpie is often said to foretell the arrival of a stranger. These are playful, charming birds of the earth, little interested in matters of spirituality or life after death; people associated with it are often atheists or simply irreligious. There is a Chinese legend in which magpies make a bridge for two star-crossed lovers to meet. They are monogamous, and therefore extra-friendly to romance; if you are in a relationship, you need to build a bridge or meet each other halfway. Finally, these birds are builders who assemble a complete domed nest rather than the more common halfway-done affair, and they may be impatient with someone who is not good at completing things or following through.

Well, it does apply to my health situation - this year is almost a carbon copy of last year, except this form of cancer is even less threatening. And in this case, they want me to take hormone-blocking drugs as well as radiation, but I have a number of reasons for disagreeing about this: I plan on arguing with the "medical oncologist" on Monday, backed up with a bunch of very technical journal articles. So that might be "taking charge of my own life/fate". Thank you, m'dear!

The time might be important here; it might be that winter will see a change in your financial status. Alternatively, there is something at work beneath the soil of your life that you must wait to develop.

For your general card, I drew Bat! The unexpected, the one who turns everything on its head, the bad encourages making peace with one's dark side and finding the good in it. The bat also represents generally the warm and the dark.

This links up with your other card quite well and reinforces the idea that there is something germinating in the dark.

I have the seed of an idea for a potential career path I want to take or business I want to start. I'm not focusing on it too hard and just letting it take root in my mind first for some time.

Hrm. Falcon leaves some room for interpretation, and you are in a better position to know than I in this case what the card means for you.
“When you look into the abyss, the abyss looks also into you.” Reality may not be what you think it is. The sky (which seems blue and seems black and is no color in the end, because it is not a thing, but an emptiness is the true abyss.) This bird understands the infinite.
A fighter and survivor, it represents the distant, noble king.
A wild thing that can be tamed, willing to make a home wherever one is offered and do what comes naturally to it in exchange.
