Although it's the end of the month, I made it back in September. In addition to the move (from which I am far from unpacked; I just got my cards unpacked today!), my grandmother, whom I was very close to, passed away. In honor of her, this month I will be asking that you support the draw by donating to Meals on Wheels. (I will provide a link to their donation page.) The draw will be tomorrow, Wednesday, the 26th; I wanted to give you advance notice so you didn't miss it!

Date: 2012-09-26 01:40 am (UTC)I buy frozen meat that shipped in heavy-duty styrofoam coolers (much stronger, and bigger, than the ones you can buy in the supermarket), and I had a big pile of them that I needed to get rid of. I had trouble finding an organization that would take them, but I wound up donating them to a non-denominational charity in the next town over that, among its other services, provides "meals on wheels" to elderly and disabled persons. They were very happy to get the foam coolers, as each one will hold a generous amount of food, and they can always use more. So from now on they're getting my leftover coolers.
I don't know whether their "meals on wheels" is affiliated in any way with Meals On Wheels, though :-(

Date: 2012-09-26 07:40 pm (UTC)I really like this local charity. They provide meals for "shut-ins", and also daily buffet-style meals at their location, and a food pantry. They collect gently used business clothing, and give it to people who need decent clothes to wear to job interviews, and they also do employment counseling and job-finding. They also provide donated winter coats for adults and children. They help people through the bureaucratic mazes of applying for all the various forms of public assistance. And they are entirely free of religous affiliation. If I had a way to get there, I'd volunteer with them, but at least I can give them all my excess foam coolers!
